Green or wildlife corridors are areas of vegetation that connect patches of habitat, allowing animals to move between them and enabling ecological processes. They are important for the future health of the plants and animals that live in Jirdarup spanning not just the Town of Victoria Park but also the City of South Perth and the City of Canning.
Green corridors can range in size – from streetscapes and home gardens created by local communities to large corridors that stretch across many different landscapes.
Important green spaces helping the Jirdarup Bushland Precinct thrive include:
- Harold Rossiter Reserve, Kensington
- Kensington Secondary School, Kensington
- Kent Street Ecological Corridor
- Moresby Street Reserve, Kensington. Very close to Jirdarup, this small piece of bushland is a great place to observe the local birds.
- Hill View Terrace Community Bushland, East Victoria Park
- Collier Reserve, Como is located next to the Collier Golf which is one of the largest Black Cockatoo roosting sites in the metro area. Collier Reserve is next to Wesley Playing Fields/Collins Oval which is managed and leased by Wesley College, but the green space next to that, Bill Grayden, is city managed and had a major upgrade – with lots of native trees planted to boost biodiversity.
- Kensington Precinct, Kensington
- Goss Avenue Reserve, Karawara. This bushland (approximately 3 8 ha ) is a local government reserve managed by the City of South Perth in association with Friends of Goss Avenue Bushland. There are two very different plant communities located in Goss Avenue Bushland – Banksia Woodland and damp land dominated by Melaleuca. - Hogg Avenue Bushland, Mt Henry Reserve in Salters Point. This South Perth patch of bushland (7,942 m2) contains some excellent examples of the natural flora of the Swan Coastal Plain. Directions.
