There was planting in Jirdarup in 2026! SUNDAY 14 JUNE ALONG BARON-HAY COURT. Thank you to the more than 120 people who came along and got the plants into the ground. Thank you to the great team from the Town of Victoria Park who organise the community planting days. All the plants were “deep-planted”, half with compost and half without to see which are the more successful. Fortunately, it rained in over the next few days, so everything was watered in. We hope that these additional plants will further protect the bushland once work starts on the development of the DPIRD site.
The Town has a second community planting day on 12 July 2026.
On Wednesday 17 June 2026 a smaller group of our dedicated landcare team joined Town staff to plant inside the Kensington Bushland. This group was kept small to safeguard this treasured bushland from dieback and too much trampling. Our team is currently designing a watering program for these plants over the coming summers to compare survival rates of watered and non-watered seedlings.
How it came about
We’re excited to have received a BUPA Healthy Cities Landcare Grant for our Kensington Bushland project and to be part of the planting of 96,500 native plants across the country, linking environmental health with community wellbeing.
Our grant of $11,500 supports two activities in the winter of 2026:
- A weekend community planting day along Baron-Hay Court, with the intention of protecting the bushland from the development on the DPIRD site. This is scheduled for Sunday 14 June 2026. Follow our Facebook or Town of Vic Park media for more detail. Or revisit this page from time to time.
- Planting in adjacent degraded areas in the Kensington Bushland. Volunteers will be watering these seedlings over the next three years. To minimise trampling and risk of disease, this will be undertaken by Town of Vic Park staff and our experienced Landcare team when they are not busy weeding.
The grant pays for 3000 tube stock, soil preparation, and ongoing care and maintenance. It is one of four awarded in Western Australia.
