The first prototype of a bird-watering station was installed at the entrance to Kensington Bushland in 2018. Its development originated when a resident contacted the Council concerned about the safety of cockatoos drinking water on the side of the road. The design concept is the inspiration of staff member Gregor Wilson.
In 2020 new and improved bird watering stations, now called a Cockitrough, were installed. This development was facilitated by a grant to the Friends from the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife.
