Bill lives near the Hill View Terrace Community Bushland and has shared his memories of it from the early 1970s.
The photo is of Bill on the street verge in 1971 (aged 4 1/2). A section of the bushland is visible in the background – this picture was taken looking towards the corner of Berwick Street and Hill View Terrace. Interestingly, the tree coverage seems to be more sparse than it is today.
Bill grew up living directly across the road and, as a child in the 1970s, spent many happy hours there with friends making cubbies in the woolly bushes, digging holes and exploring the different flowers and wildlife. He now lives a couple of blocks away and still goes there regularly to observe birds and any other wildlife in the shrub land.
Bill said, “It’s only a small patch of remnant bush, but it still provides an opportunity to connect with the land as it would have been before European settlement. I’m really pleased that the Town of Victoria Park and local community members are caring for this bushland because I’d really like to see this small patch of original habitat survive and thrive as a place where current and future generations in the area can enjoy nature.”
