In 2020, new and improved bird watering stations, now called a Cockitrough, were installed. This first was installed near the Etwell Street entrance and subsequently another near the BBQ on Harold Rossiter Park. Check out the full story on the Town of Victoria Park website.
This was a collaboration between the Town of Victoria Park and the Friends of Jirdarup Bushland with funding through a Community Conservation Grant from the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife to the Friends. These state-of-the-art watering stations are now being installed across Perth.
On 31 August 2023, a new waterer was installed at the Etwell St entrance. This waterer is designed to include a solar powered motion sensor camera system to monitor birds using the troughs. The old one was moved to the George St Reserve and connected to a solar powered water tank. This new system was designed by local company Galactic Cooperative and funded by the Town of Victoria Park and a StateNRM grant secured by the Friends of Jirdarup Bushland. There was joy in the Jirdarup community on 6 December 2023 – up to 30 cockatoos had joined the smaller birds at the waterer that was moved to the George St Reserve.
