Would you like to learn the role of birds and what they represent in Noongar culture?

This book is for everyone who has an interest in nature and conservation with a will to save our wonderful bird species from further decline in urban areas. It is a pure joy to read. Our gardens can be the corridors that support fauna that is being squeezed out of urban areas and offer a place to breed, feed and bring joy into our lives – Sabrina Hahn

The highly anticipated book, ‘Birds of Jirdarup’ by Dr Dan Carter, is coming soon.

Our sincere thanks to Hon Hannah Beazley MLA and to the Wettenhall Environmental Trust for their generous support in funding the production, to Eric McCrum OAM for his review and endorsement of the text, and to Noongar Elder Emeritus Professor Dr Leonard M Collard for permission to quote from his research. Noongar Whadjuk/Yamatji man Ron Gidgup has given permission to incorporate his original artwork in the design.

Jirdarup Bushland is the environmental jewel in the Town of Victoria Park’s crown, and we are proud to be its current custodians alongside the Friends of Jirdarup Bushland. Jirdarup means “Place of Birds” in Noongar, and this book demonstrates why that name is so apt. The photographs are simply stunning. Kudos to the talented local photographers for transporting us to the Bushland and beguiling the reader from the first page to the last. What a beautiful, informative and inspiring showcase of the unique bird species that call the Jirdarup their home – Mayor Karen Vernon
